Behind-the-Scenes with Gavin - Ship Production Supervisor

Updated: Jul 31

Gavin shares his experiences as a production supervisor, offering a unique perspective on life aboard a cruise ship

Gavin - Production Supervisor

How does the constant movement of the ship impact rehearsals and performances? (e.g. dealing with seasickness, sound adjustments)

Fortunately, our modern fleet is equipped with stabilizers that greatly help us during rough seas. Most of our itineraries are in calmer waters, but sometimes, no technology or route planning can fully counteract Mother Nature. The safety of our artists is our top priority. When we feel that the ship’s movement could pose a risk of injury, we adjust choreographies, remove acts, or, in the worst-case scenario, cancel or postpone a show. If we anticipate movement in advance, we schedule performances where the risk of injury is minimized.

How do you adapt large-scale productions to a smaller cruise ship theater space? (e.g. set design, cast movement)

Our fleet boasts advanced stage technology, featuring various moving parts, large LED screens, and sophisticated light fixtures. This setup allows us to transform the space and create the illusion of different environments without changing the set. Each production involves extensive rehearsal and preparation to ensure smooth operation and the highest quality performance.

What unexpected technical hurdles have you faced on board, and how did you overcome them? (e.g. power outages, costume malfunctions)

Our theatre is technically advanced, with designers installing the latest equipment that is as flexible and creative as our shows, guest artists, and other onboard events. However, even the smallest elements can sometimes fail, causing a chain reaction that impacts the entire show. We strive for accuracy, but live entertainment will always have its moments and challenges. Occasionally, the stage might not move as needed, microphone batteries might die mid-performance, or emergency announcements might interrupt and mute the sound system. The key is to stay calm and think clearly. The experience of our cast and team shines in these moments, as they always handle situations professionally. Additionally, our advanced intercom systems facilitate quick and easy communication between the director, technicians, and artists.

Life at sea

How do you manage a cast and crew from diverse backgrounds and nationalities? (e.g. language barriers, cultural differences)

One of the biggest challenges as a Supervisor is managing a team from diverse backgrounds. It’s crucial to remain neutral, open-minded, and understanding, setting an example for the rest of the team. Diversity is one of our greatest assets, and it’s important to recognize and celebrate it. Team-building exercises like game nights, excursions, and other fun activities help bring everyone together, focusing on commonalities rather than differences.

How does the close quarters on a ship affect team dynamics and morale?

Living and working with people from diverse cultures, religions, and backgrounds has both positive and negative aspects. On the positive side, it enhances our understanding of different people and teaches us to coexist harmoniously. However, it also means being constantly observed, with limited privacy. When under pressure or in need of a break, finding a place to unwind, relax, or enjoy some quiet time can be challenging.

How do you maintain a healthy work-life balance while working long hours at sea?

It’s important to remember that your main priority on the ship is to fulfill your work duties. When you do have free time, make the most of it by going out, traveling, and enjoying good times with friends. Friendships and connections are crucial on a ship, as they provide good company and reliable support during tough times and challenging situations.

What are some of the perks and unexpected joys of working in theater on a cruise ship?

One of the perks is having the best office on the ship. Many people would love to work in the theater and perform on stage in front of our guests. You also get the opportunity to work with great teams and high quality equipment.

Have you encountered any interesting or unusual audience members during performances?

We’ve had situations where guests enjoy the show so much that they decide they want to be part of it. They come on stage and participate in whatever we’re doing.

Show time

Can you describe a particularly memorable or challenging production you oversaw on the ship?

Every show has its challenges and memorable moments. However, the most memorable and challenging performance is often one that you have created yourself. In my position, we frequently have the opportunity to create shows and productions, utilizing all the amazing technology and talented artists available to us. This isn’t always the case for many theatre management positions. When a show you’ve created becomes a big success on board, it gives you an indescribable feeling of accomplishment.

How do you keep the show fresh and exciting for both the cast and repeat viewers?

It all comes down to the energy of the cast and the atmosphere created in the theater. People may forget the details of a show, but they will never forget the experience and the energy they felt during the performance.

What are some of the creative considerations you take into account when choosing shows for a cruise ship audience?

To create a successful show, it’s crucial to understand your audience and tailor the performance to their preferences. It’s not just about what you enjoy, but what will captivate the viewers. Consider the overall flow of the program, whether in the theater or other locations on board, to ensure a variety of emotions each night, avoiding repetitive experiences throughout the cruise.

Additionally, focus on having fun and remember that guests are here to be entertained. Plan a show that is both engaging and visually stunning, utilizing the advanced technology available on board to make it a memorable experience for everyone

How do you collaborate with the cruise line to ensure the shows align with their overall entertainment strategy?

We compile weekly reports on all events happening on board, providing feedback to the cruise line on the performance and reception of the shows by our guests. The company then reviews our comments and adjusts future productions accordingly to enhance the overall experience.

What advice would you give to someone aspiring to work in theater production on a cruise ship?

Remember to have fun, as this is a unique opportunity that not many people get. Stay professional and disciplined, enjoy your time on board, and continuously work on improving your skills. When you have the chance to collaborate with talented artists from around the world and be part of such a professional team, seize the opportunity to grow and push your limits.
