About the Role
Reporting to the Technical Manager, the Automation Technician will ensure S&MT stage machinery infrastructure is working and manage operations. Responsible for aerial flying equipment safety aspects and daily checks to deliver the system throughout the productions. As a member of the Entertainment Technical team, you will be setting up equipment including stage set used for different production shows and assist with the running of the production shows in the aft Carousel show lounge, you will be also working backstage at night, taking an active part in the production shows and the first point of contact.
Area of responsibility
Ensure the safe setup, use and maintenance of all rigging, aerial, and automation equipment used by Cast and Technicians during performances, rehearsals, and training.
Operate rigging and aerial equipment during performances and rehearsals. Including but not limited to Operating automation consoles, assisting performers into harnesses, connecting harnesses to rigging points, performing spotting duties.
Be able to assist as needed with special events, trainings, and happenings that occur within the venue, this includes but is not limited running basic audio, lighting, and video play back.
Complete daily inspections and pre-checks of all rigging and flying equipment, including motors, winches, cables, hardware, apparatus, and harnesses.
Complete pre- and post-show duties, inspections, and checks for each performance, and rehearsal; ensuring all equipment and show elements are safely stored. Assist the Technical Director in completing reports by notifying them of any issues that arise, especially when pertaining to rigging and aerial gear.
Responsible for supporting/operating during rescue operations.
Complete inventories and equipment maintenance as required and set forth by the company and Technical Director onboard
Work with a team to effectively troubleshoot and report issues with all technical equipment as they arise, in addition but not limited to report issues with rigging, aerial, and automation equipment.
Follow all reporting procedures set for by the company and venue management.
Assist with overall production needs as reasonably requested. As well as pitch in with other production related duties as necessary. This includes but is not limited to general maintenance for technical equipment, and scenic and prop elements. Play an active role in cast changeovers and installations of new programming. Knowing that during these periods of time work hours will increase while remaining in line with ILO and Maritime law.
Keep a working knowledge of the other Entertainment Technicians’ show tracks and duties to be able to cover when needed.
Help ensure effective communication across the department, to maintain high standards of work.
To create and enhance the guest experience on board making sure all events are delivered at the highest technical standard possible.
To ensure events and rehearsals start on time and all technical requirements are met.
To follow the Technical Director’s instructions and work schedules and ensure all work is carried out safely, efficiently and in accordance with all current safety and company regulations.
To ensure technical standards, product and your professional behaviour is at the highest level of the company.
To train junior ranks within the team up to industry standard.
To ensure that the company's show product is always delivered in its integrity and up to the agreed standard after the install period.
Assist the hotel operation where required; as instructed by the Cruise Director.
To ensure your appearance and grooming guidelines are always maintained.
To uphold the standards set out in your training.
A position of onboard responsibility will be held with regards to emergency procedures, guest mustering and drills (full training received on board).
Scope of duties

Led by the Technical Director & Show Operations Director, the Entertainment Technical Team consists of 7 (Sound, Lighting, Automation, 2 Riggers, Technical Director and a Show Operations Director Manager). The Entertainment Technical Team is part of the Entertainment Department, which also includes a cast of 14. The Entertainment department is directed and coordinated by the onboard Cruise Director.
You will get the chance to work with the latest entertainment technology equipment to support the delivery of the entertainment programme. As a Technician within the Entertainment Technical Team, you will co-direct the production operation in the theatre, supporting the Technical Director in the management of the team. If required by the Head Technician, you will be also responsible for the maintenance and resolution of any technical issues in the venues around the ship.
As a member of the Entertainment Department, a position of responsibility will be held with regards to emergency procedures, guest mustering and drills; specific training will be received regarding this, both prior to joining and regularly on board.
Qualification/Work Experience
Advanced knowledge & experience with TAIT automation programs • Should have basic knowledge in audio play back and mixing, lighting and video playback, operating a spotlight, and running a deck track such as moving set pieces and helping with quick changes.
Experienced in Stage Mechanics/Automation or equivalent work experience.
Preferred 1 or more contract with the company and/or minimum of 5 years’ experience in the Entertainment Industry, (preferred stage technician).
Experience in cruise environment recommended.
Automation Technician certification preferred.
Experience with show operations safety procedures.
Experience with staging procedures.
Experience with rigging equipment and components.
Experience with maintaining rigging/automation daily checks.
Knowledge of stage terminology (stage directions, curtains, etc.).
Ability to train technicians during handover process.
Ability to perform daily checks both for stage machinery and rigging equipment.
Ability to perform work at height.
Ability to support trainings for performers.
Ability to prepare performers for flying acts on every technical aspect including harnesses wearing.
Ability to clear flying acts.
Ability to perform automation system preventive maintenance.
Ability to support rescue operations during show operations.
